Samsung Electronics is working to add generative artificial intelligence (AI) features to its home appliances next year, an executive vice president has said at the IFA tech trade show in Berlin, to improve the home-life of each user.

“We are preparing to apply generative AI technologies to our home appliances,” Yoo Mi-young, head of the software development team of Samsung’s digital appliances division, said at a media briefing.

“Generative AI technologies will be applied to voice, vision and display,” she said, so that household electronic products have a better understanding of what consumers do and want and can respond accordingly, reports Yonhap news agency.

Home gadgets will be able to communicate with users in a more conversational manner, and to better respond to users’ questions based on past exchanges and in context, she added.

They will also have a clearer vision of, for example, what kind of food is being cooked in the oven, or what food ingredients are stored in the refrigerator, to be able to provide tailored recipes and dietary suggestions.

Samsung is also developing a chipset to reduce energy consumption, as home devices get smarter and process huge amounts of data.

“We are developing a chipset that helps home appliances with generative AI consume less than 0.1 watt for every 24 hours they run,” Yoo said, adding that Samsung is seeking to apply the chipset next year.

European consumers, in particular, have started seeing the importance of smarter, connected devices in light of saving energy and reducing electricity bills, she said.

“People are increasingly paying attention to the merits of connected devices, as they now see that interconnected appliances have helped them reduce energy costs.”

When it comes to AI technology development, Samsung strictly keeps three core principles in mind — fairness, transparency and accountability, she said.

Samsung started its smart home campaign in 2014, when it acquired SmartThings, a Washington-headquartered open platform for the Internet of Things.

Microsoft-owned OpenAI has released a new guide for teachers using its AI chatbot ChatGPT to assist educators in effectively incorporating the generative AI tool into their students’ learning. The newly released guide suggested prompts, an explanation of how ChatGPT works and its limitations, the efficacy of AI detectors, and a discussion on biases. On its announcement blog, the company shared examples of how professors and teachers are already using the chatbot to aid in their teaching. ChatGPT has already proved to be a useful tool for teachers, enabling them to create quizzes, tests, lesson plans, and even role-play challenging conversations.

“We’re releasing a guide for teachers using ChatGPT in their classroom — including suggested prompts, an explanation of how ChatGPT works and its limitations, the efficacy of AI detectors, and bias,” OpenAI said in a blog post.

At the American International School in Chennai, India, Geetha Venugopal compares teaching students about AI tools to teaching them how to use the internet responsibly. “In her classroom, she advises students to remember that the answers that ChatGPT gives may not be credible and accurate all the time, and to think critically about whether they should trust the answer, and then confirm the information through other primary resources,” OpenAI mentioned in the post. The goal is to help them “understand the importance of constantly working on their original critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity skills”.

Meanwhile, OpenAI has launched a business-focused edition of the company’s AI-powered chatbot app, ChatGPT Enterprise, which will offer enterprise-grade security and privacy, unlimited higher-speed GPT-4 access, longer context windows for processing longer inputs, advanced data analysis capabilities, customisation options, and much more. According to the company, ChatGPT Enterprise is SOC 2 compliant and all conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest. OpenAI said that they will not train chatbots on user enterprises’ business data or conversations. It also comes with an admin console, which lets users easily manage team members and offers single sign-on and usage insights.

Google has launched a new tool for watermarking and identifying AI-generated images — a technology that embeds a digital watermark directly into the pixels of an image, making it imperceptible to the human eye but detectable for identification. In partnership with Google Cloud, Google DeepMind (Google’s AI research division) has launched a beta version of a new tool called SynthID. This tool will help humans distinguish between real and AI-generated images easily. However, Google DeepMind states caution while using the tool as it is not entirely foolproof.

SynthID is available to a limited number of Vertex AI (Google’s platform for building AI apps and models) customers using Imagen, one of the company’s latest text-to-image models that use input text to create photorealistic images.

“While generative AI can unlock huge creative potential, it also presents new risks, like enabling creators to spread false information — both intentionally or unintentionally,” Google DeepMind said in a blog post. “Being able to identify AI-generated content is critical to empowering people with knowledge of when they’re interacting with generated media, and for helping prevent the spread of misinformation,” it added.

According to DeepMind, SynthID remains in place even after modifications, such as adding filters to images, changing their colours, and compressing them. In order to produce the tool, DeepMind trained two AI models together on a “diverse” set of images, one for watermarking and one for identification. However, SynthID cannot confidently identify watermarked images. The tool distinguishes between images that may or may not have a watermark and images that are highly likely to have one.

“SynthID isn’t foolproof against extreme image manipulations, but it does provide a promising technical approach for empowering people and organisations to work with AI-generated content responsibly. This tool could also evolve alongside other AI models and modalities beyond imagery such as audio, video, and text,” Google said. This tool provides three confidence levels for interpreting the results of watermark identification. If a digital watermark is detected, part of the image is likely generated by Imagen. The company mentioned that it will integrate the tool into more Google products and make it available to third parties in the near future.

Google announced its generative AI-powered Search at Google I/O 2023 earlier this year. The generative AI-powered Search or Search Generative Experience (SGE) is a part of Search Labs and at the time of launch, it was available only in the US. Now, the company has announced that it is bringing this generative AI-powered Search to India. “Today, we’re excited to announce that we’re rolling out SGE as an experiment in Search Labs in India in English and Hindi,” Google wrote in a blog post announcing the development.

So, what’s new in Search and how will change your experience?

Improved query response

According to the details shared by Google, Search is getting a host of new and intuitive features. Google says that with the new generative AI capabilities in Search, users will see an AI-powered overview of key information to consider with links to dig deeper as an answer to their query. Simply put, they can either ask a direct question, which can be a complex query, or break down their query into simple questions with a host of follow up questions. “This conversational mode helps you explore a topic more intuitively,” Google wrote in the blog post.

“Context will be carried over from question-to-question, to help you more naturally continue your exploration. You’ll also find helpful jumping-off points to web content and a range of perspectives that you can dig into,” the company added.

India-centric features

With the new Search Generative Experience coming to Search, Google’s search engine is also getting a bunch of new features that have been designed keeping in view various use-cases in India. For instance, Google Search users can switch from an English result to Hindi simply by tapping the language toggle button and listen to the response with Text-To-Speech by tapping the ‘Listen’ button. In addition to this, Google Search is getting a new feature wherein users can tap the microphone icon in conversational mode to ask follow-up questions instead of typing them. Google says that this feature will soon be available to the users.

Helping with coding queries

Google also announced that it the generative AI-powered Search will also help users understand and debug generated code easily. Google says that at the moment, SGE provides AI-generated overviews to help with tasks across a number of programming languages and tools. Segments of code in overviews are color-coded with syntax highlighting, so it’s faster and easier to identify elements like keywords, comments and strings, helping you better digest the code you see at a glance.

Who can access generative-AI based Search?

As far as availability is concerned, the SGE or the generative AI-powered Search will be available to opted-in users on Chrome desktop starting today. The company also said that it is rolling out this feature to the Google App on Android and iOS from today over the coming week.

Google unveiled a swath of fresh artificial intelligence technology and partnerships on Tuesday that were geared toward bringing more of the growing technology to large businesses. The Alphabet subsidiary made public a new version of its custom-built AI chips and unveiled an enterprise-scale tool to watermark and identify images generated with AI – plus tools for security and its office suite. The batch of announcements from its Google Next conference in San Francisco included new customers for its cloud software such as General Motors and Estee Lauder Companies. The flurry of announcements is part of Google’s recent effort to showcase its AI plans after Microsoft caught the company off guard with an ambitious AI strategy it has been rolling out since last year.

But its big business customers need to be deliberate and move at a different pace, Google Cloud chief Thomas Kurian said in an interview with Reuters. “We’ve generally told enterprise customers, ‘Go slowly and methodically because it’s important that you treat this as a strategic software development,'” he said. “There’s been this sort of FOMO of, ‘I need to be in generative AI for generative AI’s sake.'” FOMO refers to the fear of missing out, a common refrain in AI in recent months.

To bolster Google’s enterprise cloud service, it added 20 AI models to its collection, bringing the total to 100. The AI infrastructure includes deals to bring Google Cloud customers access to Meta Platforms’ AI model LLaMa 2 and to the startup Anthropic’s Claude 2.

Google announced new versions of its own foundation AI infrastructure that improve performance and add features. The new version of its text model called PaLM, for example, increased the amount of text users can input to make it easier to process longer documents such as legal briefs and books. Google discussed a tool that adds the capability to watermark AI-generated images. Called SynthID, the technology alters a digital image file in a way invisible to human eyes. It is designed to remain intact after an image is altered or tampered with. Google also rolled out AI updates to its suite of office software and security tools. The company unveiled an AI-powered tool that can port databases from Oracle to an open-source version, a notoriously difficult task.

CUSTOM AI CHIPS

Ahead of the announcement of its full-fledged fifth-generation tensor processing unit (TPU), Google has opened access to a version that is optimised for generative AI and large language models. The new chip, called TPU v5e, is designed to train large models but also efficiently serve content from those models. It is not as powerful as the as-yet unlaunched flagship fifth AI generation chip.

Google has stitched together the TPU v5e chips into batches of 256 that it describes as a “supercomputer.” Cloud customers can connect several pods together in order to tackle more complex computing problems.

When Microsoft introduced generative artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to Bing, its search engine saw a steep surge in its adoption, so much so that it startled Google to expedite the launch of its own AI service. Called Bing AI Chat, the chatbot uses OpenAI’s GPT-4 large language model (LLM) to deliver AI-generated results, but only the users of Bing Chat’s dedicated app and Microsoft Edge browser can access it. That restriction is finally going away. Microsoft has officially rolled out support for Bing AI Chat on Google Chrome after weeks of testing on different platforms.

“Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise are now supported in the Chrome desktop browser (using the latest Stable Channel update) for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Support for other browsers on desktop and mobile is forthcoming,” said Microsoft in the release notes published late last week.

Google Chrome users spotted Bing AI support last month, but there was no official announcement from Microsoft. That sparked the speculation that it could be possible because of some third-party add-on. Moreover, access to Bing AI Chat on Google Chrome was available only to a few people. But the latest announcement is a welcome one as it expands the availability of one of Microsoft’s most powerful tools to a wider audience.

And even though Bing AI Chat is now accessible on just Edge and Chrome, it is still a big deal. That is because Google Chrome is the most popular browser in the world. Adding support for it will make Bing AI Chat available to a lot more people who never turned to Edge or Bing AI Chat’s app. Moreover, Microsoft said it will add more browsers to the support list of Bing AI Chat, and that would finally make the company’s high-stake generative AI chatbot accessible to even more users.

Meanwhile, Google Bard, the company’s own generative AI chatbot, does not have an app of its own yet. It is available on the web, accessible through any browser on both desktop and mobile, but it is no match for Bing AI Chat currently. Some reports even suggested Bard is not up to expectations, especially with Bing AI Chat and ChatGPT in the picture.

ChatGPT Enterprise has been announced as a business-focused edition of OpenAI’s AI-powered chat boot app. The newly launched business version of ChatGPT offers enterprise-grade security and privacy, unlimited higher-speed GPT-4 access, longer context windows for processing longer inputs, advanced data analysis capabilities, customisation options, and more. OpenAI said that they will not train chatbots on user enterprises’ business data or conversations. In addition to this, ChatGPT Enterprise is also SOC 2 compliant, and all conversations are encrypted, as per the company. It also comes with an admin console, which lets users easily manage team members and offers single sign-on and usage insights.

“We believe AI can assist and elevate every aspect of our working lives and make teams more creative and productive. Today marks another step towards an AI assistant for work that helps with any task, is customized for your organization, and that protects your company data”. OpenAI wrote in a blog post.

Moreover, the newly launched business version of ChatGPT removes all caps on uses and is two times faster, as per the company’s claim. It comes with 32,000 contexts, which refers to the text the model considers before generating additional text. Models with large context windows are usually less likely to “forget” the content of recent conversations.

ChatGPT gives unlimited access to advanced data analysis known as Code interpreter, which allows users to easily analyse financial, market, scientific or any other data.

Microsoft recently launched Bing Chat Enterprise, which is Microsoft’s take on an enterprise-oriented chatbot service. ChatGPT Enterprise is on par with Bing Chat Enterprise, feature-wise.

OpenAI did not disclose the pricing of ChatGPT enterprise and said it would be dependent on the usage and use cases. “Businesses interested in ChatGPT Enterprise should get in contact with us. While we aren’t disclosing pricing, it’ll be dependent on each company’s usage and use cases,” Open AI wrote in a blog post shared with TechCrunch.

Meanwhile, CharGPT’s traffic dropped 9.7 percent while the average time spent on the web app went down by 8.5 percent globally from May to June, according to analytics company Similarweb. The dip can be attributed to the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT app for iOS and Android and summer vacation of kids. Another reason can also be increased competition from similar platforms.

Reliance Jio on Monday said it is developing artificial intelligence (AI) models and AI-powered solutions to deliver the benefits of generative AI to users, businesses, and governments. Jio Platforms — the company’s digital arm — said it wants to lead the effort in developing AI solutions specifically for the country in a bid to offer competition to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and services alike. “Today Jio promises AI to everyone, everywhere,” said Mukesh Ambani during his keynote at the 46th annual general meeting of Reliance Industries. Although the company has not divulged the specifics of its AI model, and whether it is based on GPT-4.

“Within the RIL Group, we are rapidly augmenting our talent pool and capabilities to swiftly assimilate the latest global innovations in AI, especially the recent advances in Generative AI,” said Ambani. Reliance already uses AI in several technologies, including its fibre-to-home services to reduce workloads and ensure efficiency on an industry level. However, these AI applications have not benefitted customers directly. The announcement is the company’s official confirmation that its AI technologies will expand to serve customers, besides organisations, directly in the near future.

As part of the expansion, Jio Platforms has committed to creating up to 2000MW of AI-ready computing capacity across both Cloud and Edge locations. In other words, the company said it is preparing to establish an infrastructure that can handle the computational demands of generative AI. “India has the scale. India has the data. India has the talent. But we also need digital infrastructure…,” said the chairman.

Setting up the infrastructure to meet huge demands will also require a large amount of resources, thereby, impacting the environment. Jio, however, is planning to shift most of its energy footprint in connectivity and digital services to Green Energy in the next five years. That, the company said, will not only reduce the environmental impact but also be cost-efficient. It is essential because AI relies on large-structure servers, which leave a carbon footprint and consume water to control temperature for efficient functioning. For instance, according to a study, ChatGPT, OpenAI’s generative AI chatbot, requires a bottle of fresh water for every 20-50 questions it attends.

Alongside divulging AI-related plans, Jio also announced the new smart home services, called Jio Home, as well as the date on which its first fixed wireless access service, Jio AirFiber will be introduced.
