SonyLIV will stop featuring live TV channels on its app and website from August 30, according to a major change in the streaming platform’s Term of Use Policy. Channels such as Sony TV, SAB TV, Sony BBC Earth, and Sony Max will not be available to watch live to SonyLIV users, irrespective of their subscription status. The discontinuation of live TV channels will, however, not affect SonyLIV’s live TV channel functionality on third-party platforms, such as Airtel Xstream Play, Tata Play, and Vi Play among others.

The new policy that will come into effect on August 30 will introduce changes for both paying and non-paying subscribers. Since live TV functionality is available only for SonyLIV Premium subscribers, only they will be impacted by the change despite paying the full subscription cost. Sony India has not said a word on refunds. SonyLIV subscriptions start at Rs 299 for the monthly plan, while the yearly plan costs Rs 599 and Rs 999, depending on the bouquet of features you opt for.

According to the SonyLIV website, individual programmes and select movies that are telecasted on linear channels will continue to be available on the platform. However, live telecasts of Sony channels will cease to continue after the policy comes into effect. Here are all the channels currently available to stream live on the SonyLIV app for phones, tablets, and televisions, as well as its website:

— Sony Entertainment Television

— Sony SAB

— Sony Marathi

— Sony BBC Earth

— Sony Aath

— Sony YAY

Although the live TV feature will go for good, the programmes pertaining to each channel will be available to users. The same-day premieres of episodes of a show will be available before the TV telecast to SonyLIV premium subscribers.

SonyLIV’s decision to pull the plug on live TV functionality comes days after Disney+ Hotstar was spotted testing the live TV feature on its platform, years after discontinuing it. Disney+ Hotstar removed the live TV functionality some years back without informing users, entirely relying on cricket tournaments, Star India’s programmes, and Disney-Marvel originals to increase its subscribers. However, after dominating India’s OTT market for years, Disney+ Hotstar saw a colossal dip in its subscribers last year, when it lost the rights to stream Indian Premiere League cricket matches for the next four years. Then, earlier this year, more subscribers cancelled their Disney+ Hotstar subscription owing to the removal of HBO shows from the platform.

Netflix held its annual TUDUM event over the weekend to announce a spate of new shows and new seasons of already-hit ones. It started with the announcement for Season 3 of Chris Hemsworth starrer Extraction and concluded with Alia Bhatt, Jamie Dornan, and Gal Gadot’s Heart of Stone. But between these two upcoming titles, there were several announcements, giving a preview of what to expect from the streaming giant in the coming weeks.

Among the new shows, Money Heist’s (La casa de papel) lovable character of Berlin, played by Pedro Alonso, is getting his own eponymous show. Netflix released the first teaser of Berlin, showing a new cast for the spinoff. Netflix also previewed its upcoming teen musical drama, The Archies, which is set in India’s 1960s and offers a desi touch to Riverdale’s teens. There is also new series called 3 Body Problem from the showrunners of Game of Thrones. Avatar: The Last Airbender, Netflix’s upcoming live-action series, also got a short glimpse at the show.

Extraction 3

Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction franchise is getting a third movie after the first two set off to a successful start. Both Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave were on stage to make the announcement during the TUDUM event.

Squid Game Season 2

The first season of Squid Game became a global phenomenon, bringing actors Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-Hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo to the spotlight. They all are returning with the second season of Squid Game and will be joined by new members of the cast, Yim Si-Wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-Hoon, and Yang Dong-Geun. Netflix did not drop a trailer, but the announcement about the cast makes the wait intense.

Squid Game: The Challenge

Not just a second season, Netflix is coming up with the first reality show based on Squid Game. It will involve 456 participants who will compete in schoolyard games over 10 episodes to win prize money of $4.56 million. It is identical to how Squid Game characters played different games, except for elimination by death.

Emily in Paris Season 4

Our favourite Lily Collins will return for the fourth season of the hit Netflix original series Emily in Paris. A new teaser for the show has Emily set to go on a Roman holiday in the fourth season. “Is Alfie still heartbroken? Will Gabriel get his Michelin star? Will Mandy and the band go to Eurovision? Will Sylvie’s rekindled love last? And — the question on all of our minds — will Emily and Gabriel finally get together?” Collins teased.

Berlin

From the world of Money Heist/ La casa de papel, Berlin will follow the journey of, well, Berlin before he became a part of Professor’s master plan. Pedro Alonso will reprise his role as Berlin in this eponymous series, joined by an entirely new cast. “His plan: to steal €44 million — in one afternoon.” Netflix tweeted.

The Archies

Set in 1960s India, this upcoming musical drama relives the story of Archie and his friends from Riverdale, but in an entirely different setting. The entire Indian cast, including Suhana Khan, Agastya Nanda, Khushi Kapoor, Mihir Ahuja, Dot, And Vedang Raina, will be a part of what may be best called a desi Riverdale. The first teaser of The Archies dropped alongside a sizzle reel.

Lupin Part 3

Another hit show based on a heist, Lupin is getting its third season on October 3. Omay Sy will reprise his role as Assane Diop in this Arsène Lupin-inspired show. Netflix released an exclusive clip from Part 3.

Stranger Things Season 5

Season 5 of Stranger Things may take more time than expected to come out. Due to the writers’ strike, the filming has not even begun more than a year after Season 4 was released. But Netflix gave some hope by announcing that Linda Hamilton — who starred in Terminator — will join the cast in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things.

Fubar Season 2

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Fubar came out only recently and Netflix is already renewing it for the second season. The Netflix Chief Action Officer is returning for another season without a release date.

One Piece

The live-action adaptation of one of the world’s most popular manga is coming on August 31. The cast includes Iñaki Godoy (Monkey D. Luffy), Mackenyu (Roronoa Zoro), Emily Rudd (Nami), Jacob Romero Gibson (Usopp), and Taz Skylar (Sanji).

Rebel Moon

One of the highly anticipated films, Rebel Moon, saw an announcement at the Netflix TUDUM 2023.  Zack Snyder showcased a BTS look at the movie, revealing that it will be released in two parts and each part will have its own Snyder Cut — just like the Snyder Cut for Justice League. The first part of Rebel Moon will come out on December 22, while the second part will follow soon after.

Wednesday Season 2

As we wait for the first trailer release of Wednesday Season 2, Netflix brought the cast of Season 1 together to discuss possible storylines for the second season based on fan theories. Wednesday was renewed for Season 2 back in January and Jenna Ortega will be returning as Wednesday.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Netflix finally showcased the first images for the live-action series, which fans have been waiting for a while. In addition to character shots, Netflix also released a title reveal footage that includes elements such as water, fire, earth, and air.

Outer Banks Season 4

Pogues will be returning for the fourth season and will take the story forward from the point where the treasure was finally discovered. While there was no teaser, Netflix just revealed a video of all the original Pogue members returning.

The Witcher Season 3

Netflix already released the first trailer of Season 3 of Henry Cavill’s The Witcher some weeks back, but it could not miss showcasing it during the TUDUM mega-show in Brazil. A new clip for the show shows Ciri taking on several enemies on her own, but later joined by Geralt and Yennefer.

D.P. and Sweet Home

Netflix also dropped the first look at upcoming Korean shows, D.P. and Sweet Home, in a sizzle reel.

3 Body Problem

From the creators of Game of Thrones comes a new action-cum-sci-fi show 3 Body Problem was teased at the Netflix TUDUM 2023 event. The teaser looks interesting and will keep our wait worthwhile until the release in January 2024.

Heart to Stone

Starring Gal Gadot, Alia Bhatt, and Jamie Dornan, Heart to Stone is Netflix’s upcoming movie which got its first trailer.

Netflix’s TUDUM event also included announcements about Lift, its upcoming action-comedy, Season 5 of the Love is Blind reality show, the hiatus of Cobra Kai’s Season 6, Heartstopper Season 2, All the Light We Cannot See, Bridgerton Season 3 images, Elite Season 7, and You.

Walt Disney-owned Disney+ Hotstar has announced the upcoming ICC Men’s World Cup and Asia Cup tournaments will stream for free on its mobile apps. Both upcoming cricket tournaments are among the most-viewed sports events in the world, much like the Indian Premiere League that recently concluded. While Disney+ Hotstar lost rights to stream IPL matches for five years, it retains the license to offer live streaming of the Asia Cup, which kicks off in September, and the Men’s World Cup, which will begin in October.

The free live stream of Asia Cup and World Cup matches will be available to Disney+ Hotstar’s over half-a-billion smartphone users. “The move to lift the paywall for mobile-only viewers of both, the Asia Cup and the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, is aimed at further democratising the game of cricket and making it accessible to as many mobile users in India as possible for the duration of the season,” Disney+ Hotstar said.

In addition to mobile apps, Disney+ Hotstar will also offer free live streaming on tablets. That means the live stream of the Asia Cup and the Men’s World Cup will not be available on Disney+ Hotstar’s website and TV apps. Customers will likely need a subscription for getting access to the said live streams later this year. Subscription plans of Disney+ Hotstar start at Rs 299.

The announcement comes days after Reliance Jio-owned JioCinema reported record viewership of 44.9 crore for IPL 2023 matches. The IPL 2023 finale saw concurrent live streams of over 3 crore — the biggest number for live sports streaming. JioCinema, which previously allowed users to stream movies and shows from Voot, disrupted the sports streaming industry by offering free access to live streams in up to 4K resolution, Dolby Atmos sound, and commentary in different Indian languages.

Disney+ Hotstar paid a huge price for losing the rights to stream IPL matches for the 2023-27 cycle by losing a large chunk of subscribers. Aggravating the pressure was the removal of HBO content from the platform. Disney+ Hotstar failed to renew the license for streaming HBO shows in India after March, further resulting in a drop in the subscriber count. JioCinema not only streamed IPL 2023 matches, it now hosts HBO’s and NBC’s shows through exclusive multi-year partnerships with US-based media companies.

Disney+ Hotstar is reportedly planning a revamp of its platform to include live TV functionality. The live TV feature would allow users to stream Disney’s Star channels in Android and iOS apps for phones, tablets, and smart televisions, as well as the Web version.

A Reddit user has shared a screenshot of what looks like a directory of channels available for live streaming in the Disney+ Hotstar app. It shows several popular Star Entertainment, Movies, and Sports channels. These are the channels that are likely to become available in the Disney+ Hotstar app:

  1. Star Plus
  2. Star Bharat
  3. Star Utsav
  4. Star Pravah
  5. Star Gold
  6. Star Sports Hindi 1
  7. Star Sports 1
  8. Jalsha Movies
  9. Star Jalsha
  10. Star Maa
  11. Star Maa Movies
  12. Maa Gold
  13. Star Vijay
  14. Star Suvarna Plus
  15. Star Suvarna

A link to the live TV directory posted in the sub-Reddit thread shows all the channels. However, none of the live TV channels seems to be working at the moment. Also, the list appearing in the screenshot does not include other Disney-owned channels, such as National Geographic, Disney Channel, and Hungama TV. That could change as and when Disney+ Hotstar decides to roll out the live TV functionality.

Disney+ Hotstar, previously known as Hotstar, removed live TV channels back in 2021 following the Indian government’s order for censorship on OTT platforms. The IT Rule of 2021 mandated OTT platforms censor content, which eventually resulted in the removal of live TV channels from Disney+ Hotstar. Meanwhile, other apps such as ZEE5 and SonyLIV restructured their apps to offer live TV streaming a while ago.

An attempt at revival

The purported decision to bring live TV channels back to Disney+ Hotstar app could be an attempt to revive the app’s popularity. Back when it was known as simply Hotstar, Disney’s streaming app for the Indian market retained the top spot for several years, thanks to its license to offer live streaming feeds for cricket tournaments. However, last year — when the app’s name changed to Disney+ Hotstar, the company lost the rights to stream the Indian Premier League matches for the next five years. Later, the license to stream HBO programmes also ended, prompting thousands of users to abandon the platform.

According to the official figures, Disney+ Hotstar lost more than 4.6 million subscribers in the first quarter of 2023. Since October last year, the total subscriber count of Disney+ Hotstar subscriptions has dropped by over 8.4 million. The live TV feature, thus, could be a part of the company’s effort to wrest subscribers back to the platform from Reliance Jio-owned JioCinema, which shattered all streaming records last week during the final match of IPL 2023.

Apple TV Plus is relatively new when compared with the likes of Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar. While its initial programming struggled to attract viewers, one show that turned around Apple’s high-stake streaming service’s fate is Ted Lasso. Within a short span of time, Ted Lasso became one of the favourite sitcoms, but all good things must come to an end.

The final episode of Ted Lasso’s season 3 was released Wednesday and many speculate that it might as well be the series finale. There is no confirmation from the makers of Ted Lasso about the end of the series, but for what it is worth, your favourite football coach will not amuse you with his optimism anymore. For some Apple TV Plus users, that marks the end of their commitment to the streaming service. If you have not found anything else good to watch on Apple TV Plus, you can cancel your subscription, which costs Rs 99 per month in India.

How to cancel your Apple TV Plus subscription

To cancel your Apple TV Plus subscription, you can use the Apple TV website, App Store on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or an Apple TV.

— To cancel the subscription using the Apple TV Plus website, go to the website and then click the account icon on the top right corner. Go to Settings and then click Manage in the Subscriptions section. You will see an “Edit Your Subscription” box with plans listed. Here, you will also see the option to “Cancel Subscription.” Click it and then hit Done to cancel the subscription.

— If you using your iPhone or iPad, you can easily go to the App Store and then your account by tapping your profile photo on the top right corner. A new window will show open where you must tap Subscriptions. Apple will show all your subscriptions here. Choose Apple TV+ and tap on it. On the next screen, you will see details of the subscription, as well as an option to cancel it. Tap “Cancel Subscription” and then “Confirm” in the pop-up box to cancel your subscription.

— On your Apple TV, open Settings and go to User and Accounts to open your account details. Now go to Subscriptions where all subscriptions linked to your device will appear. Choose the Apple TV+ option and then hit the Cancel Subscription button. In the next step, click Confirm to continue with the process.

JioCinema, the streaming platform run by India’s Reliance Industries Ltd, has signed a partnership with NBC Universal Media in a push to increase Hollywood content on the platform for Indian viewers, the companies said on Monday.

The multi-year deal will give JioCinema’s premium subscribers access to popular shows such as “Downton Abbey”, “Suits” and “The Office,” the companies said in a joint statement.

This comes after JioCinema signed a content streaming deal with Warner Bros Discovery Inc in April for shows such as “Succession” and “Game of Thrones”.

JioCinema announced its premium pricing earlier this month, moving away from free content model to fight rivals like Netflix and Disney in the content streaming space.

“Movies from the smash-hit Despicable Me/Minions and Fast franchises, including the newly released Fast X, as well as The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the highly anticipated IMAX-shot epic thriller Oppenheimer from Christopher Nolan, will also be heading to the service in the future,” noted Jio in its Press Release.

It’s been over a month since the country has been watching the TATA IPL 2023, in the comfort of their homes on Star Sports. With every year that passes, the experience of watching the game on your TV gets more immersive and spectacular.

For the second consecutive year, the IPL cricket tournament is being broadcasted with Dolby Atmos on Star Sports1 HD and Star Sports1 Hindi HD. That’s correct, Dolby Atmos is live for sports like cricket and if you have been watching IPL matches on Star Sports, you might have noticed some audio enhancements in the overall experience.

That’s Dolby Atmos in the play. To learn more about Dolby Atmos for sports we visited the Star Sports office in Mumbai. If you are interested to know how Live audio mixing for sports works, how Dolby Atmos works, and what’s the future of audio-visual experiences on Star Sports broadcast channels, continue reading this article.

In a brief conversation with Jayant Shah, Director Apps & Solutions Engineering at Dolby Laboratories, we discussed almost everything about audio for Live Sports like Cricket at Star Sports.

So, without further ado, let’s start with the Q&A.

How was your experience of working with Star Sports?

Since Dolby and Disney Star had been working together for years, Shah said that the experience of working with Star Sports has been phenomenal. Starting with Dolby 5.1 to now Atmos, the journey has been all about elevating the audio experience for the viewers at home and giving them a stadium-like experience in the comfort of their homes.

Since Dolby and Star Sports had a long-healthy partnership, how did the idea of bringing Atmos to cricket (like IPL) evoke?

For the second consecutive year, Dolby and Disney Star are bringing Dolby Atmos to cricket with IPL, we asked the two brands how the idea for this collaboration came about.

Dolby Star Sports

Shah said that the idea of bringing Dolby Atmos to cricket came up simply because we thought to elevate the experience for the home audience and provide an enhanced audio experience while watching sports at home.

So far, there has been Dolby 5.1 which required a set of speakers to enjoy the audio. However, with Atmos, multiple speakers are not necessary. Even a simple stereo speaker setup of a Dolby Atmos-enabled TV or of your connected Atmos-enabled audio system is enough to get the immersive experience.

Can you tell us about the Live mixing process of Dolby Atmos for sports?

Shah said that the Live mixing process is extremely creative. At the outset, the microphones placed in the stadium capture all the sound from the venue and send it to the console at the Dolby audio room at the Star Sports office. Additional audio can be derived from multiple sources such as recorded archive footage and slow-motion replay machines which are all mixed into the final output.

Image: Pranav Sawant/Techlusive

Then, the mix engineer in the Dolby Atmos audio mixing room works on the console to create an engaging mix that replicates the stadium presence as closely as possible. The creative freedom enabled by the Dolby Atmos format allows the mix engineer to create a balance between stadium ambience, on-field gameplay, and commentary. This ensures that on-field sounds and commentary are clearly audible even when the stadium audience is cheering loudly.

In terms of video as well, there are several cameras at the stadium capturing many things in a Live match. The Live video from multiple cameras then gets sent to the mixing room or PCR (Production Control Room) via fiber or satellite.

Star PCR IPL

Image: Pranav Sawant/Techlusive

The director and the team at the PCR, which includes several members decide which camera to use and then switch between cameras, replays, and graphics to produce the final output. This is done in multiple PCRs, one for each of several different regional languages. Now, this is an interesting bit.

Each feed is customized for the regional “home” audience. For example, if it’s a match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings and the Mumbai team is winning, those watching the match in the Marathi language will get to see different visuals on the screen than those watching it in the Tamil language.

Image: Pranav Sawant/Techlusive

That’s simply to ensure that the respective home audience can match the mood of the stadium for their supporting teams. The Marathi audience will see the visuals of victory and celebrations, whereas, the Tamil audience watching in the Tamil language may not be shown the visuals of Mumbai fans celebrating. Rather, they may be shown visuals about CSK, or be directed to the points table ranking.

What Dolby Codec is being used for sports like IPL on Star Sports?

Dolby Digital Plus is the codec being used for IPL on Star Sports, as said by Shah in the interview. This is the same codec used for matches in the preceding years when Dolby 5.1 was in use. This ensures backward compatibility with older systems which may be enabled only for 5.1 surround audio. Dolby Atmos simply requires a higher bitrate to accommodate the extra detail in the Atmos audio mix.

What hardware devices come into the picture for such audio mixing?

“A variety of mixing consoles can be used for Live Dolby Atmos mixing. In general, most broadcast consoles that can be used for Live 5.1 channel surround sound mixing can also be configured for mixing in Dolby Atmos. In terms of speakers, the monitoring can be done on any broadcast audio monitor. Only the number of monitoring speakers increases as we progress from stereo to 5.1 and Dolby Atmos mix monitoring. Any professional speakers used for Live mixing in stereo or surround sound can be used for Dolby Atmos as well,” said Shah.

Image: Pranav Sawant/Techlusive

Currently, Star is using a Germany-based brand LAWO’s audio console for sound mixing. It has set up GENELEC speakers for studio monitoring.

What do consumers need to enjoy this Atmos-enabled sports experience at home?

Shah said that thanks to Dolby Atmos, people don’t necessarily need to have a fancy setup of multiple speakers.

Video: Traditional Stereo (two speakers), Surround Sound (5.1 or 7.1, requires multiple-speaker setup), Atmos (can work on two or more Atmos-enabled speakers).

Instead, the stereo speaker setup of any Dolby Atmos-enabled TV or Soundbar is enough to get an immersive audio experience for sports at home.

What does the future look like? Viewership stats

When asked this question, Shah said that on the audio front for sports like cricket, there’s ‘so much to do with Atmos’. It’s about how much more can we capture from the microphones on the field.
“It depends on how far you want to go. Innovation has no limit, and we can keep adding more things to it.”

Star gave us some official numbers in regard to its viewership on Star Sports. Star Sports saw a total viewership of 48.2 crores in the first 66 games, which is the highest-ever reach for any edition of IPL surpassing the previous highest registered in 2019.

Sony Group Corp said on Wednesday that the success of hit drama “The Last Of Us” from television network HBO is boosting sales of the game series upon which it is based, in a stand-out case of the group repurposing its popular franchises.

“We could see very, very clearly that every time an episode of that show dropped that sales of the game increased very dramatically,” Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan told an investor briefing.

The success of the show is a notable example of efforts by Sony to drive business across different business lines after its transformation from an electronics maker to entertainment giant spanning games, music and movies.

Sony has also brought “The Last Of Us” franchise, which depicts characters struggling for survival in a post-apocalyptic United States, to PC as part of a push to diversify beyond consoles.

“Already our PC business is a significant profit contributor,” Ryan said.

Sony expects PC revenue to hit $450 million in the current financial year compared to $80 million two years earlier.

In consoles, supply chain snarls have eased with PlayStation 5 sales likely to catch up and then exceed PlayStation 4 during the current financial year. Meanwhile, investors are waiting for further detail on expansion into live service and mobile games.

While Sony’s traditional strength is in single-player games, more than half of PlayStation investment this year will be in live-service games, which offer continuous updated play.

Innovation in cloud technology and artificial intelligence are widely expected to shake up the gaming industry, in which Sony has played a gate-keeping role.

“We do have some fairly interesting and quite aggressive plans to accelerate our initiatives in the space of the cloud that will unfold over the course of the coming months,” Ryan said without providing details.

The video streaming business of Mukesh Ambani, Asia’s richest person, is likely to focus on pricing and local content following a deal with Warner Bros as it seeks to challenge the likes of Disney and Netflix in India, industry sources said.

Under the content deal announced on Thursday, popular series from HBO and Warner Bros, such as Harry Potter and Succession, will be available from next month on the JioCinema platform, which Ambani’s Viacom18 has promoted for weeks by offering popular IPL cricket matches for free.

A pricing strategy for JioCinema is still under discussion internally, an industry source said, but Ambani has a reputation of disrupting rivals in the price-sensitive Indian market with cheap offers. In 2016, he offered mobile data for free, making his Jio telecom service India’s top player. He is adopting a similar strategy to promote his consumer goods to rival Coca-Cola and Nestle.

Viacom18, the broadcast division of Ambani’s Reliance Industries, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Its shareholders also include Paramount Global as well as Bodhi Tree, a joint venture between James Murdoch and former top Disney executive, Uday Shankar.

The Warner deal, industry executives and media analysts said, will boost Viacom18’s already announced plans to “innovate and disrupt” the sector, and help to attract the premium English speaking audience in India.

At stake is a slice of a video streaming market that is expected to grow annually by 22%-25% to reach $13-$15 billion by 2030, according to a 2021 report by Indian lobby group CII and the Boston Consulting Group.

That compares with projected annual growth of 8.63% in the U.S. market, which is expected to hit $54.66 billion by 2027, according to Statista.

While Netflix and other rivals boast of content specially created for the India audience, JioCinema’s current free offerings largely include old Hindi and local language movies. In sports, it has IPL cricket streaming rights until 2027 and in March bagged exclusive rights for MotoGP in India.

The big challenge is lack of fresh local and global content on JioCinema, something that will be become even more critical as the IPL season ends next month.

JioCinema is in talks with various production studios and has plans to introduce dozens of TV shows and movies on the platform in the coming months, in Hindi and other languages, a second industry source told Reuters on Friday.

“There are many Indias within India. While IPL is for the masses, partnership with Warner is a precursor to JioCinema’s entry into the premium subscription segment,” said Mihir Shah, vice president at Media Partners Asia.

Nitesh Kripalani, former country head of Amazon’s Prime Video in India, said he expects Reliance’s venture to do more such deals, but pricing remains key.

“India is a value conscious market. For any media business, anywhere in the world – you need to get consumers to pay. Advertising can only pay so much,” he said.

Netflix, Amazon and Disney Hotstar have become popular in India by launching exclusive movies and web series starring Bollywood actors. They have also diversified into regional local language content.

At present Netflix – which has most the expensive subscription plans – has just 8 million subscribers, Amazon has 17 million, while Disney, which earlier had the digital rights for IPL, leads with 49 million, according to Media Partners, which doesn’t have data for JioCinema’s free service.

Karan Taurani, a vice president of India’s Elara Capital, sad JioCinema’s success will hinge on quality of its content.

“They may make so many films and series but (what if) more than 70-80% of them bomb? The only way to scale up is to really differentiate your content and make sure execution is right,” he said.

Reliance’s broadcast venture Viacom18 has signed a deal with Warner Bros. for JioCinema. As per the new multi-year agreement, JioCinema will be able to stream HBO, Max Originals, and Warner Bros. Hollywood movies and shows.

This comes almost a month after Disney broke ties with streaming platform Hotstar. Earlier, users were able to stream shows from HBO such as Succession, The Game of Thrones, and more on Disney+ Hotstar.

But ever since Disney moved away from Hotstar, Indian binge-watchers had no place for consuming HBO and other Hollywood content.

Now, however, JioCinema will bring all popular shows to the platform starting next month. As for HBO, users will be able to watch shows like House of The Dragon, The Last of Us, Succession and The White Lotus.

JioCinema users will also get returning seasons of True Detective: Night Country, Euphoria, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty and Perry Manson.

HBO Original series including The Idol, White House Plumbers, The Sympathizer and The Regime will also be added. Furthermore, documentaries like Game of Thrones, Sex & The City, Big Little Lies, Chornobyl and Veep will be coming to the platform.

As for Max Originals, And Just Like That…, Peacemaker, The Flight Attendant, Dune: The Sisterhood, The Penguin, and Duster will be making to the app.

Warner Bros. Television series and movies like East New York, Gotham Knights, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and DC Universe movies will also be available. Lastly, kids’ shows like Dexter’s Laboratory and Tom and Jerry Kids are also coming to the platform.

“Warner Bros. Discovery’s brands are incredibly popular across India, and we are pleased to partner with Viacom18 to bring our premium HBO, Max Original and Warner Bros. content to local fans. This new agreement demonstrates our commitment to South Asia as we seek to entertain audiences across more platforms, and further strengthens the scale of our regional business as a whole,” said Clement Schwebig, President, India, Southeast Asia, and Korea, Warner Bros.
